Sandiso Ngwenya: Pioneering Pharmaceutical Chemistry for a Brighter Future in Africa Born in Zimbabwe, Sandiso Ngwenya’s academic journey began with resilience. Amid economic challenges, she relocated to Zambia for school and later moved to South Africa in 2014 to pursue her passion for chemistry at Nelson Mandela University. Graduating cum laude in her BSc and Honours degrees, and then completing a Master's in Chemistry, Sandiso is now pursuing a PhD focused on pharmaceutical chemistry. Her groundbreaking research explores the synthesis of Coumarin compounds, key in producing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). Using continuous flow chemistry, a new technology in Africa, Sandiso aims to develop cost-effective, high-yield methods to support local API production, reducing reliance on imports. Despite facing imposter syndrome, she remains committed to making a difference. Her message to young women is clear: “The world is your oyster; take up as much space as you need. Science is not reserved for a certain group—pursue all your dreams!” Sandiso’s journey highlights the power of passion, perseverance, and the drive to create positive change in science and society.
